Athlete Profile - Garth Perry

Garth Perry and mate Nick Hogan

Garth has represented Special Olympics New South Wales at National Games in Basketball, Track & Field and Floor Hockey and he has also represented Special Olympics Australia in Basketball.

Garth is over 6’5’ tall and is fondly referred to as “Big Bird” by all Special Olympics athletes and volunteers.

As an athlete in his early 40’s Garth still competes in Aquatics, Tennis and Ten Pin Bowling and although he has retired from playing Basketball he still remains actively involved in the sport as a Coach.

Under the guidance of his mentor Lorraine Clark, Garth has taken over the responsibility of coaching the junior and developmental players at Sydney Northern Region. He has helped the athletes learn the skills required to play basketball, develop fitness and team work and most importantly instilled in all his athletes the importance of good sportsmanship. The teams success at the recent State Games (Gold Medal –Challenge B Division), can be directly attributed to the impact Garth has had on the athletes as a Coach and a role model.

Special Olympics Sydney Northern Region is extremely proud of Garth and the contribution he has made to Special Olympics he is a very valued member of our region.

On October 11 and 12 2008 Garth successfully completed the Special Olympics Australia Athlete Leadership Program. For the first time in his 22 years as a Special Olympics Athlete he spoke in a public forum to a group of his peers about his time in Special Olympics and the many friends he has made.

State Basketball

On Saturday 20th and 21st September two teams of basketballers (16 athletes), travelled to Terrigal to compete at the State Basketball Competition. The teams played 3 games of Basketball each with the C Grade winning two and Challenge B winning two and drawing in one game.

The C Grade team displayed great team work all weekend. Both their offensive and defensive play was great and every player gave outstanding performances. The highest point scorers for the C Grade were Bindi Fontan-Holder, Ben Crane and Anders Kobula with very impressive defensive work by our two females Analise Fadeev and Gabrielle Clark who were supported and backed up with some great individual game play by Kieran Kelleher, Nick Hogan and Darren Martin.

The Challenge B Team were simply fantastic in their first competition – capably coached by Special Olympics athletes Garth Perry this team of players grew taller with every game played. They were all hungry for the ball and after a few nervous moments settled in to playing great team work in passing and dribbling the ball.  Harrison Werner was our highest scorer with an impressive 44 points supported by Mathew Sestich who earned 22 points for the team.  Great defensive work was displayed by Steve Paranthoeine, Beth Hull, Elyce Leyland, Amanda Storey, Mark Jensen and Adrian Milner.

Head Coach Lorraine Clark is extremely proud of all players they have trained hard all year and the results are a true indication of their commitment.

Garth Perry’s success as a 1st year coach also gave the region and his mentor Lorraine a great deal to be proud of. Garth was a great basketball player and now he is on his way to be a great Special Olympics Basketball Coach.  Congratulations Garth.
